During the 20th century, theatre stages all over Europe have provided an experimental space for daring performances. Well-known directors such as Erwin Piscator and Leon Schiller have initiated plays about the Bolshevik Revolution, the two World Wars and many more significant historical events. However, the performance of these plays was often dependent on the approval of governments, as their content sometimes contradicted official narratives of history.
